Supporting the Development of Building Practice in Glasgow

Suzanne Orchard

We’re excited to be working with partners in Glasgow on a new project to help shape the future of Building Practice.

In collaboration with New Future and Glasgow School of Art, we will be leading a structured process to co-design the organisation’s business model, governance framework, and legal structure. The aim is to ensure Building Practice is established on foundations that reflect the needs of its stakeholders while providing a sustainable platform for future growth.

This work brings together key partners, potential members, and sector stakeholders to help design a model that places democratic control at the core.

A collaborative design approach

Rather than adopting a predefined structure, the project will take stakeholders through a journey, enabling those involved to shape how the organisation operates and evolves.

The process will begin with a stakeholder meeting to introduce the project and align on shared objectives, expectations, and the overall journey.

Participants will then take part in an Ownership Model Canvas workshop in Glasgow, exploring the initiative’s purpose, potential stakeholders, decision-making approaches, and financial needs. This session will help establish the core foundations for how the organisation should function.

Building on this work, partners will explore governance and legal structure options, reviewing different participatory models and organisational forms to identify the most appropriate structure for Building Practice.

The final stage will focus on business model development, using the Business Model Canvas to assess financial feasibility, risks, and opportunities. Draft proposals for the business plan and governance model will then be shared with the group for feedback and refinement.

Looking ahead

By July 2026, the goal is for Building Practice to have a fully scoped and collectively agreed business and governance model, ready for legal incorporation and well positioned to secure future funding to support programme delivery.

“We’re really pleased to be supporting partners in Glasgow through this collaborative process. Co-designing governance and business models with the people who will ultimately shape and deliver the work is key to creating organisations that are resilient, inclusive, and built for the long term.”

If your organisation is exploring similar collaborative models, governance design, or organisational development, we’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to get in touch with our team to start a conversation (suzanne@stirtoaction.com).
